One of the joys of writing a big sprawling tapestry of a series like the Shadowhunter books is being able to explore a million kinds of love: the love of friends like Will and Jem or Emma and Cristina, romantic love like Magnus and Alec or Will and Tessa, the love of brothers and sisters like Ty and Livvy, Mark and Julian, or of parents and children like Jocelyn and Clary. And I think one of the biggest kinds of love all the characters come to consider over the course of their stories is what it means to feel empathic love — to feel love for other human beings because they are human like you, to want to help and protect them, to want to save the world — because for Shadowhunters, that’s what it always comes down to in the end. Empathic love for suffering fellow humans is something we’re all thinking about, considering and feeling right now, and I think that’s what Valentine’s Day 2017 is about for so many of us.
